Transitions (Vancouver)

Vancouver - 3 Oct 2025 to 5 Oct 2025
David Juriansz

5Rhythms Workshop with David Juriansz

Transitions…are part of life. From daylight to darkness, working week to weekend, winter to spring…yet even with this constant pulse, there are times we become acutely aware of a transition phase we are in. In such times it is wise to listen to the language of the body – our emotional reactions, our sense of self in relationship, our health. I love stories of people in transition. We can learn so much from each other.

For me, as for thousands of people, Gabrielle Roth’s 5Rhythms® have been both an exhilarating, inspiring practice and solid ground for support in times of change. In this workshop, we will make physical, the transitions from flow to staccato, from staccato to chaos and so on through stillness and back to flow. I will offer this altered map, with a range of practical tools to activate our movement wisdom on the dance floor, so that it becomes easier to access in daily life.

Over 15 years, this workshop has been shaped and refined through both my experience and all those who have danced their transitions with me. If you feel like your life is in transition – bring the raw material to the dancefloor. If you’ve done this workshop before, I invite you back with the lived experience of those transitions you danced out in the world.

Endings and new beginnings! Plus the tricky stuff in the middle. I hope you will join me, and bring your own unique dancing story, so together we can follow this map into the territory of transition.

Wave Upon Wave

Victoria - 10 Oct 2025 to 12 Oct 2025
Joanne Winstanley

"I know that if a wave of energy is allowed to complete itself, it yields a whole new wave, and in fact that is all I really know." ~ Gabrielle Roth

The 5Rhythms® is a simple, powerful movement practice which guides us to re-connect with our innate body-knowledge, wellness, and wisdom. Each individual rhythm – Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness – holds many teachings, and when we dance all 5Rhythms in sequence, or in a cycle, we call that a 'Wave.' Many natural cycles, when left to their own unfolding, will naturally follow a wave-like pattern: the rhythm of an individual day, the way that stress and/or excitement wants to move through our body, the phases of a creative project or a human life. In this work, the Wave is a central metaphor, a pathway, and a map we can follow and practice and explore.

This workshop is both an introduction and a deep dive into Gabrielle Roth’s healing movement work – the 5Rhythms. We will gather and share a whole a weekend to expand and immerse into the physicality of our movement practice. We will move together through our own terrain, individual and collective, each of us with respect for our body’s own pacing, and in our own way. We will explore the qualities, embodiment, and gifts of each rhythm as it carries us through a Wave.
